PLEASE LINK EITHER TO THIS PAGE OR TO THE PAGE LINKED BELOW. thank you Kerry _____________________________ ROCKET 88 Q: The song "rocket 88" has been called the 1st rock and roll song. I want the lyrics, the lyricist, the act that did it, the original album it was released on, and the year of original release. 195??????????????. Thanks - Tom A: Hello Tom- I've always wondered about this song myself - so thanks for asking! This song was originally released in 1951. It was recorded by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, though they were in reality, Ike Turners band the Kings of Rhythm. Turner is the actual author, though credit is given to Brenston. This release, however, was not the one that became a hit, nor is it the one that is considered the "first" rock & roll record. That credit goes to Bill Haley (known as Bill Haley and the Saddlemen at the time). It was released as a single on the Holiday label in 1951 with "Tearstains on My Heart" as the B side. It was released again in 1954 under the name Bill Haley and the Comets on the Essex label. This time it was released as a 45 and an EP, with "Dance with a Dolly" and "Rocket 88" on the A side and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and "Green Tree Boogie on the B side. It was not released on an album at that time. Although, you can find it on the album "The Best Bill Haley and His Comets 1951-1954". You can also find the Ike Turner version on the album "Rhythm Rockin' Blues" I've included the lyrics below. I hope you find this helpful. Take care- Raven ROCKET 88** Bill Haley You may have heard of jalopies, You heard the noise they make, Let me introduce you to my Rocket '88. Yes it's great, just won't wait, Everybody likes my Rocket '88. Gals will ride in style, Moving all along. V-8 motor and this modern design, My convertible top and the gals don't mind Sporting with me, riding all around town for joy. Blow your horn, Rocket, blow your horn Step in my Rocket and a don't be late, We're pulling out about a half past eight. Going on the corner and a having some fun, Taking my Rocket on a long, hot run. Ooh, going out, Oozing and cruising along. Now that you've ridden in my Rocket '88, I'll be around every night about eight. You know it's great, don't be late, Everybody likes my Rocket '88. Gals will ride in style, Moving all along. ** Disclaimer: I do not claim rights to these lyrics.
