Planning a Gift Card Shower

PLANNING A GIFT CARD SHOWER

It's not unusual today for a bride to be to request a gift card shower. Especially if the couple already has a home together, or one or both has been married before.

First off: Don't sweat it! I know there are some people who may think this is tacky. Well, they are allowed to. And the bride is allowed to request people give gift cards. No guest is obligated to give a gift card as their only choice of gift, and the bride must allow that there will be people who want to give a gift that is more personal. As long as everyone respects each others point of view, it will be fine.

Now, this will of course rule out certain activities. There won't be enough gift opening for Bridal Bingo or Beat the Clock, but you can still play some of the other games.

Some people ask you what they can do to make their gift card special. Well, just about everybody has gift cards these days, so they can get ones that might not be expected. Perhaps phone cards, so they can call distant friends and relatives when they get back from their honeymoon. How about supermarket gift cards? When they get home, they'll need to go buy food. They could get spa gift cards or certificates. A busy bride could use a massage!

Or they could get a gift card for a more obvious place, say Wal-Mart or Home Depot, but place the card within a nice little frame. Then the bride has something to open, and gift she asked for and a nice little extra that will always remind her of that guest.

Are you or someone else connected with the shower creative? Make a scrapbook for the couple. Include a note with the invitation asking guests to send pictures, via email or postal mail. If they are so inclined, allow them to make pages themselves and send them on to you. The scrapbook only needs to be started. It's just the beginning of their life together. A dozen pages or so will get it off to a nice start. If you have pictures left over, give them to the bride along with the scrapbook. If there is someone with a camera printer that can be used without a computer, ask them to bring it along. You can take pictures at the shower and print them out right away. Give guests journaling cards (found with scrapbook supplies) to write notes to go along with their pictures and add them to the scrapbook at the shower. This gives every guest the opportunity to give the couple something personal, and yet honor the bride's wishes for gift cards.

Another idea, video post card for the bride! Have someone bring a camcorder (if you don't have one, go to your local rental center). Set aside an area for guests to be "interviewed". While you wait for the bride to arrive, take guests one at a time to the interview area. Have them give a message for the bride and groom, tell a funny story or share a favorite memory.

Later, instead of having the bride open gifts (because she asked for gift cards), hook the camcorder up to a TV (if no one has one they are willing to bring, again - get one at your local rental center). Have all the guests gather around and turn the lights down or even off. Watch the video together. Since you took people out of the way, no one will know if they have said similar things, told the same stories, or told anything about another person at the shower. This is also great because many times, the guests at these events never do get to see the finished product.

While the video is playing, you can have a game of Beat the Clock. The only difference is, instead of giving a prize to the person who's gift the bride is opening when the timer goes off, you give a gift to the person who is being interviewed when the timer goes off!

If you have the camera before hand and are ambitious, create and opening for the video. Talk to the bride's father - he won't be at the shower. Show the room where she grew up and where the groom grew up. Show the place where they met or went on their first date. Get all the bridal party together and have them send a message to the bride.

The possibilities are endless! Just think of some way for guests to contribute something, in some unique way, that will make a special memory for the bride and groom.
