I Call Your Name - Naming the Beatles
Below is information on the progression of names the Beatles went through that I compiled when working on my Beatles website: Kerry's Beatles/Paul McCartney Site on MSN. ________________________________________________ PLEASE NOTE: I TOOK THE TIME TO COMPILE THIS LIST MYSELF IN 2003 AND NOW I'M POSTING IT HERE FOR OTHERS TO SEE. HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT COPY IT AND PLACE IT ON YOUR OWN SITE. PLEASE EITHER LINK TO THIS PAGE OR THE PAGE LINKED BELOW. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. Thank you Kerry __________________________________________________ I Call Your Name What's in a name? Apparently more than you think. The Beatles went through several names and variations before settling on "Beatles with and A". (for good) Johnny And The Moondogs came in 1959 when the Quarry Men entered the Carroll Levis talent competition. They felt it would be a more suitable name since most successful bands of the time had the name of the lead singer in the title. They used it from October '59 through January '60. The Silver Beatles was used from May 10 to early June of 1960. The "Long John" part was only used during an audition to back singer Billy Fury. While preparing for the audition, another musician (Brian Cassar of Cass and the Cassanovas) told them that their name was "rediculous" and suggested Long John and the Silver Beatles (as in Long John Silver). Well, they did not end up backing Billy Fury, though The Silver Beatles did secure a tour of Scotland backing up Johnny Gentle. During this tour, Paul became "Paul Ramone" because he though it sounded "very exotic" and "foreign sounding." George transformed into Carl Harrison in defferrence to his American Rockabilly idol - Carl Perkins. And Stuart Sutcliffe became Suart de Stael in acknowledgement of Russian painter, Nicholas de Stael. While John was adamant that he always retained his own name, Paul has contradicted this by insisting he was Long John for the duration of the Scottish tour. They then went on the be The Silver Beats, The Beatles, The Silver Beetles, back to The Silver Beatles with an "A", then, finally on August 16, 1960 - the final change to The Beatles. (OH - by the way - it's rumored that punk rock group - The Ramones - took their name from Paul's use of "Ramone" during their stint with Johnny Gentle.)
