Decorating the Hall for a Bridal Shower
DECORATING THE HALL This is a companion piece to my Planning a Great Bridal Shower page. If you hold the shower in a hall, odds are you will want to decorate. Here's the thing - less really is more. You might be tempted to cover up as much as you can of the ugly walls and unsightly posts, but don't. Allow them to blend into the background. Your attempts to hide them will most likely draw more attention to them. Remember, your guests will spend much of their time sitting down. Make the tables pleasant and keep them occupied. No one will notice the ugly paneling or the horrible paint job. Restrict your effort to the tables, food area, gift area etc. A little something over the food area might be nice if you can do it, but I wouldn't worry too much about the walls. Make life easy and buy a roll of paper or plastic to cover the tables with. It's cheaper, easier and you don't have to worry about the number or size of the tables. Also, if you have an accident before the guests arrive, you've got extra! A simple paper doily under the centerpiece will set it off nicely from the table cloth. It looks fancy and feminine and is an inexpensive touch. An alternative to that annoying confetti people sprinkle all over the table (gets into everything and is nearly impossible to vacuum up if it gets on the carpeting) are silk rose petals. You can get that at most party stores and craft stores. Sprinkle a few on either side of the centerpiece. You don't need a lot. Just a few will add a lovely touch of elegance and romance. Keep in mind your table cloths though! If you are having white table cloths, you won't want pure white petals. Buy things you can use again. For a little more than you'd spend on those paper bells and streamers, get a few floral garlands from the craft store (or Wal-Mart - or the Christmas Tree Shop if you're lucky enough to have one near you). String one across the front of the gift table. Drape one along the back of the bride's chair. Use one to decorate the cake table. Afterward, you can use them in your home, for other parties, or even as a clever and pretty way to wrap gifts (in place of traditional ribbon). Are you, or someone involved in the shower, crafty? Check your supplies - see what you've got lying around. Be creative and unusual. Pull petals from silk flowers you have in an old arrangement. Cut small strips of pretty curling ribbon to scatter on tables. Got some old plastic jewels or rhinestones that have been sitting in a box for years? Scatter them around the cake or buffet table. Are you a decorating freak at Christmas? Bring some strings of lights to drape across the table as decorations instead of flowers or streamers. THERE IS NO RULE THAT EVERYTHING HAS TO MATCH! Ok - so some may prefer things that way - and that's fine. But you don't have to do it like that if you don't want to. For my wedding (ok we're talking showers here, not weddings right? Well, it still applies, so read on) I collected tea pots from yard sales, flea markets and antique shops. Everyone was different, copper, silver, ceramic, porcelain, pottery. All shapes and colors. I filled each pot with silk flowers that complimented the particular pot. At the reception, each table was treated to a completely unique centerpiece. Guests discussed the different arrangements. It was a big hit. Everyone wanted to bring them home. My mother in law still has hers displayed in her dining room, 13 years later (copper with daffodils). So, if Big Lots has a surplus of candles and flowers, but only a few of each color, why pass it up? My bridesmaids bought mismatched tea cups to fill with a candle and flowers for my shower, because it went with my wedding centerpieces. Did anyone notice they weren't all the same? You betcha! And they loved it! Does the bride to be have a particular collection, or passion for a certain type of thing - use it! The day is about her right? Who cares if it doesn't all match? The bride will love that you made such an effort to incorporate so many things she likes. It can also be added fun during the games. One table can be "the lilacs" while another table is "the roses". Or you can pit "the sea horses" against "the star fish". Is there a special theme to the wedding? Make it part of the shower too. Does the bride collect teddy bears? Have a "teddy bear picnic". Put a cute teddy to be the centerpiece at each table. Cover the tables with checked cloths. Use a picnic basket for guests to put cards into. Serve cold chicken, tuna salad and pbj! Have little individual bags of chips instead of a big bowl. Get little plastic ants from the party store to scatter along the buffet. See - it's not so hard once you think of one thing the bride really likes, is it? Hope this helps spark some fun ideas!
